What Is Discovery-Based Learning and How Does It Work?

The principle of discovery-based learning is straightforward: students learn better when they are placed at the forefront of information acquisition and construction. This is why our teachers use organised exercises to help students discover their own mathematical intuitions.

Students in our courses take the lead in exploring new ideas exciting, hands-on experiments and leading questions. Meanwhile, the teacher acts as a mentor, offering advice and correcting any myths that might arise. Students become specialists in each mathematical method they learn adapting their findings to realistic exercises and detailed ventures.

Students will learn and develop the in-depth, conceptual skills they will need to excel in their more advanced mathematics classes and potential career areas in both of these courses.

Why Do Students Enroll in Our Elementary Math Classes?

Not all is suited to the conventional classroom.

In a typical mathematics classroom, children are often put in groups of 25 or more students and forced to find the correct answer to a given question. As a result, students learn early on that their mathematical abilities are fixed: they are either good or poor at math. With no space to appreciate the learning experience, most students become disengaged and never fully realise their mathematical ability.

These feelings are often reinforced extracurricular mathematics activities. Instead of emphasising creative awareness, imagination, or hands-on exercises, such programmes emphasise “skill and drill” instruction. Fluency practise is an important part of learning mathematical knowledge, but it is far from the only one.
